#Gist: See How Stars Marked Mother's Day

WHILST in the UK, Mothering Sunday is a spring celebration, our friends around the world wait until May to honour their mothers. The celebration has been official in the US for over century, after Anna Jarvis - a mums' groups leader during the Civil War - established Mother's Day in memory of her own late mother (whose birthday was in May), and president Woodrow Wilson declared it a holiday in 1914. Since, it has become a veritable festival of motherhood. From the VS Angel's cute throwbacks to candid photos from Vogue cover girls, we take a look at how the stars stateside paid tribute to their nearest and dearest.

#Gist: See How Celebrities Handle "The Politics Question"

When it comes to politics; should celebrities be more engaged?

WITH the shocking Brexit result last June, Theresa May's swift appointment as prime minister and a snap election fast-approaching, the political landscape in the UK has never felt so volatile. Thus, making probes on politics the question du jour in celebrity interviews as of late. But how are Britain’s influential A-listers joining the conversation? And how valuable are their contributions?

When it comes to discussing matters that veer away from pre publicist-approved territory, some - like Harry Styles - are quick to jump in with a quippy line or two without going into too much detail, while others will keep defiantly shtum in fear of sounding (or being exposed as) uninformed. This leaves most celebs in a bit of a Catch-22 scenario: damned if they do, damned if they don't.

In response to the @leave.eu campaign who have today tried to put a spin on quotes made 20 years ago about keeping or losing the pound, I have to say strongly my comments were not about this referendum and should not be misused in this way! I believe in my country, I believe in a future for my children where we are stronger together and I support the #remain campaign. @strongerineurope
JUNE 21, 2016

In the lead-up to last year's referendum, celebrities certainly didn't shy away from sharing their views. Cara DelevingneVictoria Beckham and Daniel Craig were just some of the famous faces to share their support for the Remain campaign on their social media accounts while another 250 - including Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley signed a letter urging Britons to support the decision to stay within the EU. Others - including Elizabeth Hurley and Michael Caine - spoke vehemently about their reasons for voting Leave. But with the General Election just three weeks away, it seems that Celebsville has gone quiet. Andy Murray and Victoria Beckham were just some of the well-known names to stipulate critics after stating their political views - could it be that celebrities are avoiding getting involved this time around at the risk of being vilified?

As June 8 nears, perhaps we will start to see more British celebrities using their influence to speak up, if not through sharing their personal beliefs thank at least by encouraging people to vote. Whilst they gather their thoughts, Vogue takes a closer look at how the stars have handled “the politics question” so far.

#Politics: A New Dawn: The Era Of The First Daughter

As Emmanuel Macron's step-daughter, Tiphaine Auzière, takes steps towards a career in his political party, we look at the emerging era of the first daughter
T
HE moniker "first daughter" has never been as prevalent in the headlines as it is right now, thanks to Ivanka Trump's initiation into the world of politics courtesy of her father's role as US president. The subsequent - and continuous - headlines that have analysed, detailed and dissected her personal life, business interests and sartorial choices ever since are on a level that even first lady Melania Trump hasn't been indulged with, let alone her predecessors in the White House, Chelsea Clinton and the Obama girls. But, thanks to a certain French election, the term may not only conjure Trump to mind for too much longer.

               PRESS ASSOCIATION

In France, the step-daughter of newly elected president Emmanuel Macron and youngest daughter of his wife Brigitte, Tiphaine Auzière, has emerged as a voice to be reckoned with. In an interview with French television channel BFMTV ahead of last weekend's official inauguration of Macron into power, Auzière, 32, condemned comments which have focused on the 25-year age gap that exists between her mother and the president, reports The Guardian, calling out "jealous" opponents.

“I think we cannot remain indifferent to this, and now I do not want to give any importance to people who convey this kind of stuff, because I find it totally outrageous in France in the 21st Century to make such attacks," said Auzière. “These are attacks that we wouldn’t direct at male politicians or at a man who would accompany a female politician. So I think there’s a lot of jealousy, and that this is very inappropriate... On the ground, on the contrary, I meet people who admire what she does, her work, her involvement. If people have nothing else to do but criticise, let them do it, it will only bring us closer together.”

Her comments echo those of president Macron himself, who addressed speculation over the age gap last week, telling Le Parisien: "If I was 20 years older than my wife, nobody would think for a single second that we couldn’t be legitimately together". Yet Auzière's comments signal more than just a public defence of her mother, rather the start of her "first daughter" public profile which has striking similarities to her counterpart across the pond.
Tiphaine Auzière with her mother Brigitte Macron

Similarly to 35-year-old Trump, who officially became an (unpaid) employee of her father's administration following January's inauguration, Auzière recently revealed her intention to stand as a parliamentary candidate for Macron’s En Marche! party - a declaration of support for her step-father, his person and his policies; like Trump, Auzière is a married mother of two (to Elise and Aurele) in her early thirties with a successful career of her own; and, like Trump, she is a child of divorce, who appears to be on excellent terms with her step-parent, to whom she too is closer in age than her biological parent (Ivanka and Melania are 12 years apart, while there is seven years between Tiphaine and Emmanuel).
                  Ivanka and Melania Trump

In contrast to Trump, Auzière doesn't appear to have the same controversy facing her own political career. Already a successful lawyer, having worked on fraud and murder cases, she has the same background as many leading figures and will only reach a position of political power should she be voted into the French Parliament. Trump, on the other hand, has had to navigate tricky conflict-of-interest issues relating to her eponymous fashion company and own business interests, not to mention questions over her credentials for securing such a senior unelected political role.

Both, however, have the full endorsement of their paternal president, who have each supported their daughters' careers pre and post election and have been openly encouraging of their ambition - clever, given the wider electorate they appeal to and the confidence they provide. It heralds a new era of the powerful offspring in addition to the power of the spouse, one where the first daughter is one of the most trusted allies a president can have in the current climate.
